We often get guests that are considering moving here, or students with parents who want to know what there is to do around here. I usually look at them and smile. Where do I start? How about right here in Historical Murfreesboro. This quiet but eclectic and diverse town is home to a wonderfully maintained and loved Historical District that offers tours throughout the year as well some really cool events. The district is made up of thirteen sites from beautiful and history rich homes, a country store, a working Blacksmith, a Transportation and Agricultural Museum, the Rea Museum and home to the Gatlin Gun, the Hertford Academy and adjacent Cemetery, a Print Shop, a Gorgeous 1700s Kitchen and working Hearth, a Garden Maze, the Winborne Law Office, a Tin Smith Shop and more! Also known as the MHA they present yearly events such as Living History Days October 9th and 10th which is a Reenacted Retrospect to the past and it's History. Then there is the outrageous "Historical Haunt" October 30th and 31st that takes over the eight square blocks of the historic district, and it is Halloween Fun at its best! Then there is Candlelight Christmas December 3rd and 4th. If you want that feel warm all over wonderful Christmas feeling, then this is the Holiday Tour for you. Thirteen exquisitely decorated Historic Sites, Old Time Dress and Fair, Christmas Characters, live music at various sites, a roaring Blacksmith fire, hundreds and hundreds of gorgeously placed and lit torches and candelabras, horse drawn carriage rides, a Christmas Elf and so much more. Travel to another Christmas Universe back to Murfreesboro.

For those who enjoy fishing, hunting or boating, Murfreesboro is located right on the Meherrin River.
Ahoskie, the next town over adds to the flavor our unique county offers. If golf is your thing, then the near by Beechwood Country Club will satisfy your needs. Also in Ahoskie is the Gallery Theatre, which is one of only ten remaining Vaudeville theatres left in America. The theatre offers cutting edge live play and musical performances as well as an outstanding summer youth program. Ahoskie’s Heritage Day celebration on Sept 11th and 12th has tons to do and see such as fireworks, a parade, a cook off, 5k run and so much more. The Meherrin Nation’s annual “Pow Wow” is a colorful and wonderfully amazing cultural event taking place October 2nd through the 4th. Let’s watch a Movie in the Park at Ahoskie’s Amphitheatre! I could actually rattle off many more things of interest, but need to bring it to a close. Hertford County is an amazing place and offers more than you think in regards to wholesome fun and historic beauty. So if anyone asks…you tell them this is the place to be!
